Founded in 1913 as the regional headquarters for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, Smithers is a remote town located in northwestern British Columbia. While forestry and mining have played a large role in the town’s development, the community now has a keen interest in environmental protection. Smithers has a thriving arts scene, and is well known for its outdoor recreation. The annual Mid-Summer Music Festival in late June brings in some of the biggest names in Canadian music. The snow-peaked Hudson Bay Mountain which towers above at 5,413 feet (1,650 m), forms a backdrop to Smithers.
